Thinking About Bringing a Friend to Class? Here’s How to Do It Right.

Some of the best martial artists in our community got started because a friend brought them along. If you love training at CVMA, it’s only natural to want to share it. Here’s how to make your friend’s first visit a great one—for them and for you.

We love that you share your passion with friends and family. Here are our thoughts on helping others find all of the joy and benefits of training.

1. Focus on Invitation, Not Pressure

Start simple. “Hey, I’ve been doing karate at CVMA and I really think you’d enjoy it. Want to come check it out?” Let your friend decide when the time is right. We always offer a free first week, no strings attached—so there’s zero risk for them.

2. Make Sure They Fill Out the Free Trial Form

Before they come to class, have them fill out the Online Release Form. It helps us prepare for new visitors and make sure they’re welcomed properly. Each person training needs their own form, even if they’re part of your family.

3. Set the Tone: Curious, Not Competitive

Your friend might feel nervous or self-conscious, especially if they’re new to martial arts. Reassure them that no one is expected to be perfect. They can go at their own pace, and everyone starts somewhere. Their only job is to try their best.

4. Help Them Know What to Expect

Let them know what to wear (comfortable gym clothes, barefoot), what time to arrive (at least 10 minutes early), and what kind of vibe to expect (welcoming, structured, and fun). You don’t need to coach them—just give them enough info to feel comfortable.

5. Listen—Then Follow Up

After class, ask what they thought. Not in a sales-y way—just with curiosity. If they loved it, awesome! If they’re unsure, let them sit with it. Some people know instantly, others take time. No pressure.

6. Show Up With Them Again

If your friend decides to come back, try to attend class with them (at least the first few times). Having a familiar face in the room makes a big difference—and helps them feel like they belong faster.

7. Let Them Hear from Us, Too

We’ll reach out to them after their trial to see how they liked it. If they didn’t get a reply or invite to the Student Portal within a week, remind them to check in, or you can check in for them.

Final Thought: Be Proud, Not Pushy

You don’t have to convince anyone. Just be yourself. Show up, train hard, and be the kind of partner someone would want to train alongside. That’s the best recruitment there is.

Thanks for helping grow the CVMA community—one friend at a time.
